Born in Bradford, Afzal Kahn is one of the most celebrated and influential bespoke car designers England has ever produced.
Afzal’s first step in the realm of business was cemented in the world of production – literally. He worked for free in a plastic moulding factory in order to attain vital experience of the manufacturing industry. The hours were long and tiring, but the experience is one he refuses to dismiss as being anything less than pivotal.
In 1996, Afzal Launched the completely new and innovative RS-R and the RS-S alloy wheels – the first set of wheels which truly revolutionised the market.
Therefore, it wasn’t long before Kahn began to cause a stir in the international automotive industry. “I was the first manufacturer to design a wheel with a spoke that ran to the very edge of the rim,” says Afzal. “It’s strange that now this particular style has become one of the most replicated in the world.” From the UK to the Middle East, from Russia to America and from the road to the cinema screen, chances are that if you’ve spotted a beautiful, high – flying alloy wheel design, it will have stemmed from Kahn’s Design.
Before long, Afzal had expanded his business from wheels to designing car accessories, exhausts and body kits.
In 2001 he set up V12 Power Ltd, now one of the most prestigious bespoke vehicle specialists in the UK. But keen to move away from dealing with standard manufactured vehicles, Afzal decided to go one step further and bring his own touch to bespoke vehicles: thus Project Kahn was born. Now the most successful automotive design house in the UK, and with franchises around the world – Afzal is adamant that his company ethos remains unchanged. “The company’s ethos is all about European styling. We make tailored vehicle solutions for bespoke clients who want to break free from the conformities of standard manufactures.” For Afzal, it’s the creative aspect of design and re-design that get his mind whirring.
“I have no interest in the bling aspect or culture. Other people can do all that if they wish. As a designer, it’s about coming up with fresh ideas and creating a master piece.”
Today, the Project Kahn empire comprises of franchises throughout the world. His designs often draw a distinguished crowd with Daryll Hannah, Quentin Tarantino and Steven Gerrard amongst his many admirers.
In 2008, he added a new watch and accessory range to his output. Such is the exuberance of passion and opulent beauty – Is it any wonder Project Kahn is referred to as the Gucci of the Bespoke car design world?
It’s a fitting ethos, for when it comes to this tycoon, one thing is clear: at the speed Afzal Kahn is moving at, it’s unlikely that even one of his bespoke cars will be able to keep up with him.
