Now we give you a look at the cars driven by certain billionaires.

It seems that for the super-rich, a vehicle is seen not as a status symbol, but as a means to an end in which to get from point A to point B.

Status is something that these billionaires need not prove to others. In many cases, the people on our list prefer to live inconspicuously, avoiding the limelight at all costs. This might explain why many of their vehicles cost less than your own daily driver.

1. Bill Gates – $50 billion (previous list) – Porsche 911 Convertible (996)

Bill Gates is the founder of Microsoft.

He vents his software stress behind the wheel of two Porsches. His daily drive, a 1999 Porsche 911 Convertible is ripe for replacement, especially considering that Porsche has totally redesigned the latest 911, the 997, for 2005. Now, after waiting some 10 years, Gates can finally enjoy his other favourite Porsche: a rare (1 of 230) 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe.

In fact, due to the 959’s questionable emissions and unknown crash ratings, it took a federal law signed by President Clinton for Bill Gates to legally drive his 959 on American roads. Rumour has it that Bill Gates and Paul Allen employed Microsoft engineers to write a computer program that could simulate the 959’s crashworthiness, which helped in the bill’s passage.

2. Warren Buffett – $42 billion (previous list) – Lincoln Town Car Signature

With a license plate that reads “THRIFTY,” it could belong to no other than billionaire investor Warren Buffett…

When not sitting at the captain’s chair of his 413-foot yacht, Octopus, Microsoft co-founder Allen can be found cruising the autobahn in his 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe. Originally, Allen planned to drive his Porsche on American soil, but stringent emissions standards and crash-test ratings kept his and Bill Gates’ 959s impounded in customs. Frustrated, Allen gave up and decided to ship his 959 back to Europe, where he enjoys driving it today. When he is in Seattle, Allen has a 1988 Mazda B-Series Pickup that he uses to get around.

Lotus Elise

Those of you who feel their automotive glamour has somewhat diminished when behind the wheel of a Lotus Elise can now turn to Kahn Design to enhance the vehicle.

To celebrate the British automaker’s 60th anniversary, Kahn Design Kahn released these images and revealed details on the limited production Elise, for this is a project developed in conjunction with Lotus themselves.

The Lotus Elise is an ultimate British race car for the road and Project Kahn has developed a sporty orientation of the vehicle. The most prominent element within the Project Kahn package is the full aerodynamic body styling system. This completely transforms the car, providing a complete and encapsulating look. The styling system comprises a front spoiler, ventilated front wings, larger side air intake ducts, side sills and a rear spoiler.

Its exterior has been upgraded with an aerodynamic styling package, while the interior is given the full Kahn treatment with full leather seats and door trim. Performance is increased thanks to air flow improvements with the addition of the Kahn sports exhaust plus the suspension is lowered with 28 stage shock absorbers for improved handling.

So stay gorgeous with this rather delicious vehicle!

http://www.kahndesign.com/automotive/projectkahn/?page=elise&id=elise&make=lotus

Pearl White Phantom

Arriving in the pearl white Project Kahn Rolls-Royce Phantom at the Oscars or at a casino in Monte Carlo would ensure everyone will know someone special is about make a grand entrance; this ‘Pearl White’ beauty has a richness befitting a car of this exclusive nature.

The foremost features of the Rolls-Royce Phantom are exquisite to say the least. The wheel has been designed by A. Kahn Design to take the original centre cap and has a meticulous diamond polish in each spoke: Their new 9.5 X 22” Kahn Silver Mist wheel is subtle, and provides OE fitment with superior style – this effortlessly compliments the Phantom.

Furthermore, a complete bespoke interior design service is available to suit individual tastes along with clear side repeaters and black piano facias. As the UK’s leading automotive design house, Project Kahn seems to have realized the importance of dynamic cutting edge designs whilst staying true to the original form. Their elegant and sculpted Phantom evolved through skilled artistic innovation, state-of-the art manufacturing and materials technology. Rolls-Royce owners will testify to the exuberance of passion and sumptuous beauty of a Kahn Design.

Owning the Rolls Royce DHC pertains to a level of bespoke authenticity that will bring back memories of the time honored Rolls-Royce tradition while providing up to date European styling and keeping with the Rolls Royce ethos.

Furthermore, today’s big hitters are small-fry in historic terms, a quick glance at some real old behemoths is all it takes to put these modern vehicles into perspective and to silence anyone who thinks an addiction to excess is a purely modern affliction.

Biggest engine in a concept car: 13.6-litres

In the 1930s Cadillac created the luxurious V16 for the likes of Pope Pius XII, starlet Mae West and, er, Al Capone – and 70 years later revisited the idea with the 1,000 hp/1,000 lb ft Cadillac Sixteen Concept. This time it came with a ‘green’ twist though, something called Displacement on Demand.

This shut down half the cylinders to reduce emissions then automatically reactivated them when the driver’s right foot decided they’re needed. Unfortunately its chances of going into production are about the same as that of Pius XII lending his car to Capone when the latter’s was in for repair.

Biggest engine in a Smart: 5.67-litres

The brainchild, if that’s the word, of rally driver Stefan Attart the Smart Forfun2 mated a Smart body to Unimog 406 underpinnings including the latter’s six-cylinder OM 352 diesel engine. Outputting 84 bhp this makes it by far the puniest car here, despite having twice the punch of the original.

It nevertheless turns heads wherever it goes thanks to its mammoth 65 cm ground clearance, 26 inch rims and 3.7 metre height. Despite appearances, it’s quite a serious vehicle, Attart having insisted on manually controlled air suspension to give the driver a very real advantage on extreme downhill gradients.

Biggest engine in a limousine: 12.7-litres

Twenty-one feet long and with a fourteen-foot wheelbase, the Bugatti Type 41 – invariably known as the Royale – was the right car at the wrong time, or maybe just the wrong car.
After just six examples had been built for sale a number of its straight-eight engines were redeployed pulling railway trains. No stranger to expensive exotics – he’d previously bought a Grand Prix Mercedes and a Bugatti Royale – dropping a half-tonne Merlin into a 1938 Phantom II Continental must have seemed obvious.

Fuel feed was a problem for the 1,000hp V12 – eventually NASCAR pumps did the trick at a rate of 100 gallons an hour – but now it’s complete the towering torque means there’s no need to shift out of top.

Biggest engine in a Ferrari: seven litres

For years European sports car makers snootily dismissed the Yanks’ simple trusting faith in cubic inches, choosing instead to combat their crude ‘lazy litres’ with clever technology – at least until the Ford GT40 and McLaren’s Chevrolet-engined M8 began to dominate at Le Mans and in Can-Am.

Eventually even Enzo was stung into action, wheeling out the Ferrari 712 – seven litres, 12 cylinders – in an attempt to silence the American upstarts once and for all.
The Cosworth Sport 300 is the first road car to wear the prestigious Cosworth badge for over a decade. The design of the 4×4 supercar has been significantly influenced by the dramatic and flamboyant appearances of the Ford and Mercedes Cosworth vehicles of the late 80s and early 90s.

Cosworth have performed their engineering skills on the Range Rover TDV8 Diesel Power plant, increasing the Power and providing massive torque gains.

The specification of the Kahn Cosworth Sport RSE 300 is impressive.

For this, buyers get a set of 9.5×22 inch (Front) and 10×22 inch (Rear) and 285x35x22 tyres, flared wheel arches, modified front bumper, Cosworth rear spoiler and lower boot spoiler.

The 3.6-litre V8 diesel engine gets an increase in power from 286bhp to 300bhp enabling a 0-62mph time of 8 seconds and top speed of 135mph.

You can get your hands on a Kahn Cosworth 300 First Edition for £59,995 – however you won’t get one with the F1 plate which cost company founder Afzal Kahn £440,000.

2) Own an expensive number plate:

It’s not only eye – catching but worth millions!

For petrol heads, it is a succinct symbol of motoring power and glamour. And Afzal Kahn owns the UK’s most expensive number plate: F1.

Purchased for over £460,000 in January 2008, it beat the previous record of £331,000 for M1, sold by auctioneers Bonhams in 2006.

The 104 year old registration was previously on a £30,000 Volvo s80 used by the council chairman.

“I knew I had to have it,” said Afzal. “I have spent years chasing it. I cannot believe I’ve finally got it.”

The much sought-after registration also attracted the attention of Formula One’s Eddie Irvine and Bernie Ecclestone.

View the video of Afzal with the F1 number plate on BBC1:

3) Have your own product :

As Afzal Kahn loves his watches, it was natural Kahn design would manoeuvre into the Swiss watch market. The designs are truly breathtaking, capturing the Kahn concept of producing products for the individual that demands perfection.

The Kahn timepieces collection offers a variety of products, a stunning collection of contemporary designs – combining the timeless elegance of Kahn classic designs with beautiful craftsmanship – dynamic flows attention to detail and a cutting edge style to create a watch of distinction.

From the aggressive to the Military Edition to the sleek Time Squared piece. All watches are made to the highest quality in Switzerland and include their own serial number and presentation case to prove authenticity of the product.

These exclusive watches reflect the quality and attention to detail that A Kahn Design apply to any venture.

4) Street Cred:

In fact, while waiting at several red lights, our customers have told us some people literally walk over to them in order to get a better look at the unique car.

Few break free from the pressures of conformity, convention must be challenged and existence redefined. Once boundaries are rejected, it is possible to believe that the world can be changed. Project Kahn was created to challenge convention and redefine ideals.

A. Kahn envisaged from the very beginning that each Project Khan product would be a timeless classic, reflecting European style and, individuality and quality, rather than mass produced clichés. Boldness combined with old-world craftsmanship. The Project Kahn collection is brought to you from the artistic vision of one of the world’s leading automotive fashion houses giving you that street cred.

Not when you have Alan Sugar whizzing hither and thither in his Phantom every week on The Apprentice. And on the other side, Simon Cowell doing much the same thing on The X Factor. Maybe it’s because there is simply no alternative. The Phantom has the pluto-matic market all to itself; a first cousin only to silence, and manners, and breeding. It is an exquisite car and I would have one tomorrow if it weren’t so bloody expensive. That and the fact my wife has said she would divorce me. And then kill me with a knife.

However, when I came home to find it sitting in my drive, all huge and brilliant, I’m afraid I started to dribble. And then my wife came home. “Jesus H Christ,” she said. “What is that monstrosity doing here?” An argument ensued. She said it was vulgar. I said she was from the Isle of Man so she’d know. Some doors slammed. And I went for a drive. Like its hard top brother, this also has no rivals. Well, unless you count the Bentley Azure, which is of course excellent. If you like to waft around in something that can trace its roots back to 1959. Which means you’d be wafting around in something that’s older than me. The Rolls doesn’t look or feel old fashioned at all. Everything, from the unpainted bonnet to the backwards-opening suicide doors to the rattan carpets and, yes, even the teak Sunseeker-style decking on the back, makes it look as fresh and as futuristic as tomorrow morning’s papers. Add to this steering, suspension and a gearbox, all of which feel decidedly American and you very quickly learn to back off and waft. The next day we took it to a party in Marlow, me in the driver’s seat and my wife curled up in the passenger footwell in case she was seen. But it didn’t matter, because we weren’t speaking anyway.

This is mainly because we had comprehensively failed to find a way of opening the boot, so she’d put her bags on the back seat and her favourite scarf had blown away. And also, the satellite navigation system – one of the few bits on the car obviously to have been lifted from a BMW – steadfastly refused to acknowledge Marlow existed.

When we arrived at our party in Marlow everyone went berserk. I’ve never seen a car cause such a stir, and suddenly the point of the Roller became crystal clear. It is not built for speed or grip. It is not built to excite with its handling or the roar from its exhaust. It is not built to be safe, or frugal, or cheap. It is not built to do any of the things we have come to expect of cars in recent years. It is not built to go places. It is built to arrive. This car, then, is not a car at all. It is a fanfare. A blast of trumpeteering to silence the crowds when someone special is about to enter the room. The reason why there’s no advertising for this car is simple. It’s built to advertise you. Sure, I will admit that in England it is a bit ostentatious, a sunflower in a field of weeds. Arriving anywhere here in such a thing is the same as arriving with a Rolex at an NUM reunion. But arriving in a Drophead at the Oscars or at the casino in Monte Carlo would be more impressive, I suspect, than arriving in Keira Knightley.

And because of this I shall ignore the pleas of my wife. And give it five stars.
